Sorry, Not Sorry – My 2014

After Boston I said if the season ended today I wouldn’t regret it. I should have knocked on wood or something, because my running was prophetically never same after that. After a lackluster performance at Ice Age 50, a greedy attempt to accumulate Montrail Ultra Cup points, I added stupid to injury by running the Bay to Breakers centipede with the West Valley Bros.  All I needed to do was to finish Western States and I would have won the Montrail Ultra Cup.  Instead Bay to Breakers was my last race of the year and I could hardly walk without pain while spectating Western. So in the end Ian, Mr. Professional, Mr. Consistent, walked away with that title to more than make up for my sneaky victory over him at Rocky  Maybe I should have continued to ask him coaching questions.

Still, I meant what I said after Boston. At that point I had an unfathomable 100 mile debut and had just managed to take 4 minutes off my marathon PR in a matter of 12 weeks. If you told me at the beginning of the year I would do that and not run much after, again I would have taken it.  In the previous 6 months I had a half-marathon PR, several great cross country races, and the best fitness of my life.  So yeah, I’m sorry in 2014 I could not suppress my lifetime bests in mileage and vert numbers. How did I handle my injury. After a brief stint embracing my title of mopey (thanks Vargo) I stayed connected to the community; I shared in the triumphs of my Bros and I managed to make even more friends in this amazing community. As 2015 starts I plan to continue to build up fitness, rebuild that hamstring, and appreciate every run that my hamstring allows me to complete. So yeah, sorry, not sorry.

As you say, up to April you had more than a year’s worth of success so you still have that. Let’s see if we can’t fix the hamstring on Diablo in a week and a half. Plus I hope the move went well.
